About theorist

During his work on the Czech and foreign art scenes, Jiří Ševčík became involved in almost all branches of art history. Along with art theory and criticism, he first studied architecture. Under the influence of materials written by the architects Robert Venturi, James Stirling and Charles Jencks, he found his way to the biggest trend of the time, postmodernism. He then introduced important texts to a Czech audience through translations and samizdat publications.

During the 1980s he and his wife Jana expanded their interest to other spheres, especially contemporary painting. Since then the Ševčíks have had a huge influence on Czech culture, especially due to the new opinions and perspectives they brought to debates at the time. It is often overlooked just how important was the fact that they maintained intense relations with many artists, e.g. with the circle around the Tvrdohlaví group, thus supporting them in what was unconventional work at that time.

Following the Velvet Revolution of 1989, the Ševčíks became an important curatorial and theoretical team with a reach beyond the borders of Czechoslovakia. During the 1990s, for example, they organised many exhibitions of Czech artists in Germany and France. Starting in 1995, Jiří Ševčík was a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where in 1997 he created the Academic Research Institute dealing with Czech art in the latter half of the 20th century. From the very start of his career, Ševčík focused mainly on the theory of architecture and urbanism. During the 1960s he was editor of the journal Architecture and subsequently worked as a research fellow at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University, a post he held until 1989. Collective studies devoted to the North Bohemian town of Most are an important legacy of this period. The case study Obraz města Mostu / Image of the City of Most from 1978, based on a study by Kevin Lynch, furthers a period discussion regarding the dysfunctionality of prefab housing estates and their ill-conceived urban concepts. The study is beneficial, among other things, in that it draws attention to the negative psychological effects of prefab architecture. In 1985 Ševčík followed up this study with a text called Obraz města a čtvrti Vinohrad / Image of the City and District of Vinohrady.

The 1980s saw a turning point in his interest. This was not only under the influence of Jana Ševčíková, who was at that time concentrating on gothic sculpture, but also under the strong impression of a visit to the Válová sisters in Kladno. Thanks to the Ševčíks, these hitherto unknown painters began to create a name for themselves amongst specialists. And the exhibition that the Ševčíks organised for the sisters in 1983 in Cheb marked the beginning of the couple’s curatorial activities, which picked up pace to such an extent that they found themselves organising several exhibitions a year. Though the Ševčíks focused more on the youngest generation of artists, they also discovered older artists – as well as the Válová sisters there was Zdena Fibichová and Vladimír Preclík – for whom they organised exhibitions and wrote texts in catalogues.

From the early 1980s onwards, the Ševčíks published many important texts, mainly in the journal Umění a řemesla (Arts and Crafts), which introduced the term postmodernism to the public. One of their most important texts was Loučení s modernismem / A Farewell to Postmodernism of 1985. A term originally derived from architecture was relatively easy to apply to the Czech environment. Because of the climate at the time, which saw the restrictions of the 1980s gradually relaxed in cultural and social life, there was a desire for change, especially among the young. This change was not only to be political, but impact the very way we view art. The wild post-revolutionary years were thus foreshadowed in the latter half of the 1980s, a fact perfectly demonstrated in the series of exhibitions entitled Confrontations. These gave birth to a circle of artists who best embodied the feelings and ideas of the Ševčíks regarding a new, progressive art that would break away from older, obsolete ways of thinking about traditional painting and sculpture. Over the next few years, the interpretation of the postmodern turn in art became the theme of several polemical texts written by the Ševčíks, e.g. Umění 80. let / Art of the 1990s and Zpráva z Prahy. Tradice jako morální závazek / Report from Prague: Tradition as a Moral Commitment of 1988.

Although Jiří Ševčík turned more and more during the 1980s to the theoretical study of painting, he did not neglect the issue of contemporary Czechoslovak architecture. He devoted several specialist texts to it, e.g. Aktuální tendence v české a slovenské architektuře 70. –80. let / Current Tendencies in Czech and Slovak Architecture in the 1970s and 80s (1985), as well as texts in which he dealt with a specific architectural problem, e.g. the completion of the Old Town Hall, a topic that occupied him for a long time. He then summarised his conclusions in a joint text with Jana Ševčíková entitled Dostavba Staroměstské radnice v Praze / The Completion of the Old Town Hall in Prague) from 1988, in which he openly criticises the system of architectural practice in Czechoslovakia at that time. At the same time the Ševčíks participated at the unofficial “conferences” of Czech and Slovak architects entitled “Meetings at Spišská kapitula”. This represented the culmination of their role as unofficial spokespersons of the progressive architectural current, which they promoted in opposition to the existing, outdated and ossified system in which the chief architect was the state and the main criterion was not the quality of the building, but its price and how quickly it could be built.

During the 1990s, the position of Jiří and Jana Ševčík on the Czech scene was further strengthened even on an institutional level thanks to the functions they held. Starting 1990, Jiří Ševčík was the main curator of the City of Prague Gallery, and from 1991 onward entered into an intense collaboration with the private gallery MXM, which in a very short time became the centre of cultural life in Prague. From the early 1990s onwards there were no constraints placed on the couple’s curatorial ambitions, and during this decade they organised many important exhibitions of contemporary art at which they occupied the role of curator in the full sense of the word, among the first people to do so in this country (these exhibitions included To, co zbývá / That which is Left, 1993; Zkušební provoz / Test Run, 1995 and Snížený rozpočet / Reduced Budget, 1997). At the same time their contacts abroad afforded them the opportunity to present Czech art in other countries, e.g. at the exhibition ZweiterAusgang / Second Exit (Aachen, 1993) and Situation Prag-Dialog zweiter Generationen / The Prague Situation – A Dialogue of Two Generations (Hamburg, 1994), etc.

However, Jiří Ševčík did not only deal with contemporary art. He also felt keenly the debt and the gaps that the study of art in the Czech Republic suffered from, which had been misinterpreted for political reasons after 1948. This in turn prompted him to establish the Academic Research Institute at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, the aim of which was to conduct research into recent art history. One of the institute’s first outcomes was an anthology of texts entitled České umění 1938–1989 / programy / kritické texty / dokumenty / Czech Art 1938–1989 / programmes / critical texts / documents of 2001, followed by České umění 1980–2010 / Czech Art 1980–2010, as well as a compilation of texts on architecture entitled Česká a slovenská architektura 1971–2011 / Czech and Slovak Architecture 1971–2011. Since 2003 Jiří Ševčík has been curator of the Gallery of the Austrian Culture Centre in Prague, and four years later was awarded the Austrian Honorary Cross for Science and the arts. In 2018 the Ševčíks received the State Prize of the Ministry of Culture for their life’s work.
