Photographer, pedagogue, historical photographer, and curator. Since 1978 he has worked as an expert assistant, since 1994 an associate professor, and in1999 he became a professor at the Photography Department at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU). He directed the school’s secretariat for the history of photography and photographic theory. Since 1981 he has acted as director of the Institute for Artistic Photography of the Czech Photographers Union, and in 1990 he became director of the Institute for Creative Photography at the Silesian University’s Faculty of Philosophy and Natural Sciences in Opava. Since 2001 he has been a member of the board for the European Society for the History of Photography headquartered in Vienna. He is a contributor for the Czech Republic to the Imago magazine. He is also head writer for the internet magazine, www.photorevue.com, and a long-term collaborator with the Mladá fronta Dnes and Hospodářské noviny daily newspapers, as well as the magazines: Ateliér, Fotograf, Fotografie Magazín, DIGI Foto, European Photography, Photonews, Kwartalnik Fotografia, History of Photography, et. al. He is both author and co-author of a number of books on photography (Česká fotografická avantgarda – Czech Photographic Avant-garde, Česká fotografie 90. Let – Czech Photography of the 1990s, František Drtikol, Jaroslav Rössler, Eugen Wiškovský, etc.). He also prepared a number of exhibits of Czech photography together with Miroslav Vojtěchský, Jan Mlčoch and/or Pierre Bonhomme. He is curator at the Opera Gallery in Ostrava and of the Photography Cabinet of the Dům umění (Art House) in Opava. His photographic works focus almost exclusively on free composition. In his beginnings he created nudes and scene photos. In the mid-1970s he began to concentrate on subjective documentary photos, where since the early 1980s he has been using black-and-white as well as colour photographs. He became known primarily in the mid-1970s for the development and as-yet-unfinished collection of works, Cosi nevyslovitelného (Something unmentionable), where he worked markedly with black-white and colour hue scales, decomposition, light and shadows, and only fleeting indications of possible scenes often recorded in several picture plans.
