About work

The theme of this installation is woman and womanhood and her relentless connection with the social and familial conditions that have long shaped humankind. An important theme is trauma and the severed links that break down our relationships. Ženata is concerned above all with generational syndromes that are passed down from parent to child and are accompanied by the emergence of defensive relationship mechanisms that the artist calls “stone hearts”. The space of the exhibition is filled with pots, washed laundry, and items associated with childhood and home. The installation is accompanied by audio, textual and luminescent interventions in the space. The double exhibition took place in the Small Fortress of the Terezín Memorial and at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art.

“Considerations of whether it is at all possible to deviate from the path you are destined to take, even though this determination is not clear and yet is still somehow inevitable, because your ancestors bequeathed you with unconscious methods, their lives and their destinies as a thread to which you are bound – maybe this is what is called trans-generational transfer. Prisoners in their own heads, is it still true? Trapped in the cells of their own destiny?” (source: http://www.dox.cz/cs/vystavy/kamila-zenata-zensky-dvur)
