At a recent exhibition, Jiří Načeradský exhibited one of his very early works: Woman with a Flag from the year 1959. It originated at a time when the author was still studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. This painting, which had never been exhibited before, surprisingly encompasses Načeradský’s later focus: his inclination to the figure (female in particular) and his liking of the grotesque style. The Woman with a Flag was born as a parody of Čumpelík’s Communist constructional development paintings. The happy looking woman with blond curly hair is a repaint of a poster, torn off from a notice board, which depicted a woman in the 1st May Communist parade enthusiastically waving a flag. Načeradský, however, undressed this “comrade”, painted her as plump woman and replaced the motif of the state flag with the symbolic geometric (at the same time erotic) shape.
Figures, especially female ones, became emblematic for Načeradský’s entire work. During the first half of the 1960s, he was still searching for his way of expression and tried various stylistic conceptions including paraphrasing of old masters up to Picasso. He always stayed loyal to the figure and did not succumb to the back then distinct streams of informel abstraction, or imaginative painting tendencies. “... the reason was my rebellion against the local period stream. The guys from structural abstraction ascribed only brown, grey and the non-figural. I defended classical figurative painting and colours”, recalls the author.
This painter’s famous painting era starts in the second half of the 1960s. At that time he is inclined to the world that he is immediately surrounded by. He works with stimulants from pop art and comics. Thematically, he became famous with his paintings of sports subjects taken from news coverage photographs. “There were no other decent photographs in the newspapers at that time. Contemporary art in the world was inspired by political photographs, but in our country it was just ‘the comrades are flying to Moscow, the comrades are leaving Moscow.” The only vivid, contrasting and dynamic photographs were the sports ones. I bought a newspaper in the morning, found a great picture, threw it on canvas in a couple of hours and went to the pub – it was awesome, that was year 1967”, Načeradský describes his work back then. These canvases looked very contemporary and their grotesque conception and interest in innovative depiction of the figure, immediately classified them in the stream of the just emerging New Figuration (Holiday on Ice, 1967, Runner K, 1967).
Simultaneously with these sports scenes, however, he was also painting pictures that basically followed up on the Woman with a Flag from the year 1959. The female body is presented there in exaggeratingly stylized form. The beauty of the naked female body, worshipped for centuries, is grotesquely paraphrased here. And although these figures are of rather monstrous character, feminity is very much present in them and the paintings stand out with their erotic charge (EOA, 1967, Big Eared Purple Woman, 1967). It was exactly that contrast between the endlessly mesmering female attraction and her as if fated encroachment into the life of man that became typical for Načeradský’s work. The woman in his paintings is a sort of femme fatale in modern interpretation: man is constantly leading a battle with her savage sexuality. That is also the case on the canvas paying tribute to the icon of the silver screen – Brigitte Bardote, who is surprisingly not depicted as a monster. However, the men gaping at her transformed to (probably impotent) freaks (BB and Old Men, 1967)
Načeradský admits that he ended up in a kind of sceptical mood at the beginning of the 1970s. The dismal years after the entry of the Normalization period in Czechoslovakia took away his wide spread take off. He even says himself that he lost his humour. But I don’t think that it was completely true. It is certain, however, that his creative expression changed. His originally expressively urgent painting started to change with respect to the formal aspect: his originally persistent carnal shapes suddenly changed to some sort of biomechanisms in the form of geometrically tuned machine constructions (Alpa Machines, 1974, Radars, 1974). During the second half of the 1980s the artist’s expression started to liberate again, although it never reached the expressive positions of his past work). Once again it started to be erotic again. The nearly pornographic images of the female body continue to be stylized with simple geometrizing, aerial reduction of shape (On the Beach, 1976). And this is also the beginning of the “praying mantis period”. The woman is identified with the notion of insect femme fatale: as is known, the female praying mantis is famous for marital cannibalism because after mating she eats her male-inseminator. This is how paintings such as Praying Mantis Alpa (1980) or Super Praying Mantis’ (1980) came about.
It can be said that during the 1980’s the artist moved in spheres previously indicated. Developmentally, Načeradský’s work did not bring any changes. In spite of that, every one of his paintings was always a new study that did not repeat any schemes previously expressed. Therefore, the expression of the newly painted paintings did not lack a strong emotional charge. The 1990s can be characterized in a similar way. There was a novelty – paintings that stylized figures into lightly sketched geometrizing shapes (Female Diamond, 1996, Naked Ruddle, 1994). They resemble the paintings of Paul Klee in a way, but maybe they originated due to the artist’s need to disengage, at least for a little while, from his urgently emotional painting. It did not, however, disappear from the artist’s painting and it continued to come back only to take over again after the year 2000. Although Načeradský’s most recent work is rather a modification of something previously expressed, it is fascinating that his paintings do not lose on the force of testimony. This is probably due to the artist’s true painting talent, which is stimulated by the unstoppably eruptive need to express himself. Načeradský’s spontaneity and painting virtuosity, which thrusts straightforwardly and directly to the top, have Picasso’s dimensions. Načeradský deservedly belongs among the great painters of Czech art
