Pavla Malinová is one of the most distinctive contemporary emerging Czech visual artists. She became widely known in 2019 as a finalist of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award when she received appreciation by the jury for her paintings with “complex aesthetics which lightly glides through a whole range of diverse historical references without narcissistically wallowing in a self-referential relation to the classic medium.” (https://www.sjch.cz/pavla-malinova/, accessed 31 January 2020)
Pavla Malinová comes from Vsetín. After graduating from the Secondary School of Arts and Crafts and several unsuccessful attempts to enrol at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, she joined the newly established Studio of Painting II under František Kowolovský at the Faculty of Arts in Ostrava. Kowolovský’s pedagogical approach had a formative influence on the artist’s work and endowed her early production with a characteristic non-uniform quality. The author experimented with photography and video, and in her second year she also became the frontwoman of the electropunk band Like She, which included her classmate from Ostrava, artist Jan Vytiska.
Ostrava and its environment has played an important role in Pavla Malinová to this day. The generation of painters studying in Ostrava and coming from Valašské Meziříčí – in addition to Pavla Malinová, for example, the aforementioned Jan Vytiska – was centred around the music group Ilove69popgejů founded by Jakub Adamec and Pavel Pernický. Their project overlapped into the visual arts and, in Blanka Švédová’s words: “can be described as a vibrant visualised collective identity built with an essential honesty”. (https://www.artlist.cz/jakub-adamec-5459/, accessed 29 December 2020). It was characteristic of most of the then emerging artists who collaborated with this project that even after their arrival in Prague they retained the peculiarity of the Ostrava scene.
It was the free atmosphere at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Ostrava that enabled Pavla Malinová to see beyond the frame of paintings and engage in a dialogue with other types of media, although painting has remained her main means of expression. The themes, which the artist explores mostly in the form of whole cycles, do not appear only in her paintings, but can also be found in her video production. For example, in a video called Zenová předzahrádka (2016) the artist performs a “rehabilitation imitation” (apparently referring to the painting of the same name from 2015) and uses her hands to process or even “caress” a basket full of walnuts. The crushing of nuts and the subsequent smoothing of the resulting pulp is accompanied by a whispering ASMR-style voice inducing a blissful state of relaxation.
The topic of spirituality and physical and psychological tranquility still represents one of the key motifs of Pavla Malinová’s work, although it was present in its most concentrated form mainly in 2015 and in the following years. Symptomatic in this sense was, for example, the exhibition Esoterická dutosvětskost (2015) at the Nevan Contempo gallery, where curator Jiří Havlíček labelled her work as “New New Age”. Her works bordering on abstract painting were accompanied by a spatial installation created in collaboration with guest artist Filip Kraus, who created typography for the exhibition presented on objects made of exercise mattresses evoking the atmosphere of a gym and the feelings associated with exercise. The artist complemented her paintings with drawings on the gallery walls depicting robust figures and spiritual symbols that are characteristic for her work. The paintings reflected on the theme of spiritual exercise through pasty, geometric shapes in which other exercising figures were intertwined in a similar manner as portrayed in her works Odstupňovaná srdečnost (2015) and the aforementioned Rehabilitační imitace (2015).
Working with space can be mentioned as another characteristic feature of Pavla Malinová’s work. One example is Intermarium (2016), an exhibition in the Centre for Contemporary Art FUTURA, Keyhole, Labyrinth of the Soul (2017) in Szara Gallery in Katowice in Poland or the exhibition of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2019 held in Moravian Gallery. For the exhibition Intermarium (2016) she again created a mural – a type of painting in which she uses a restricted colour palette in order to convey a clearer message. This was pragmatic choice with regard to the political concept of the exhibition dealing with the position of Central Europe vis-à-vis the West. In an interview with Anna Remešová and Alžběta Cibulková for Artalk, she stated that “(...) reality and the current political situation are probably most reflected in my murals, where I can be more specific and precise. Which is mainly thanks to the colours. There are way too many in paintings, where they get layered and the message gets a bit little bit lost.” (https://artalk.cz/2019/02/27/pavla-malinova-my-jsme-se-hlavne-nebali/, accessed 1 January 2021)
The exhibition called Keyhole, Labyrinth of the Soul (2017) was characteristic for Pavla Malinová both formally, that is in terms of the spatial installation, and by its motif that was loosely tying on the previous theme of spirituality, namely the motif of keyholes. These themed paintings include Klíčový strom (2017), Štěstí (2017) and Klíčová krajina (2017). Keyholes also served as the initial shape for figures that started to appear in paintings such as Klíčová žena (2017) and Klíčová dírka (2017). From 2018 onwards, figures – heads and hands that resemble statues in their stocky robustness – begin to appear more prominently in her work.
Until now, the last major solo presentation of Pavla Malinová's current work was the exhibition Prázdné objetí (2020) at the lítost gallery. In the displayed figurative paintings and drawings, the structure played the main role and they focused on depicting the relationships of the figures – a recurring theme in the artist’s work in general. For example, the painting Objetí II (2020) invited to reflections on the interconnectedness of humans and nature, where the depicted figure, with a green grasshopper on the back of the hand, was at the same time wrapped by some kind of a liana whose texture was situated in the central composition of the painting. A pencil and charcoal drawing entitled Hlava #5 (2020) was placed in the adjacent room of the gallery on a yellow contrasting background. It represented an identical figure, only in black and white – evoking an elaborate sketch. From the point of view of the content and message a parallel to the video Zenová předzahrádka (2016) is noticeable, as it also thematizes the relationship between humans and nature. Pavla Malinová’s works are indeed transformative, at the same time, revealing smooth and logical transitions upon a retrospective look.
